Past

Alexis Hagreaves fell in love with his older sister Augusta. He forced himself on her one night, which is how Cain came about. The whole time she was giving birth to Cain she was crying out for God to forgive her, to take away this son of the devil. So when Cain was born her hair turned white and she went mad. The Hargreaves family locked Augusta in a nut house while they forced Alexis to marry another woman.
Now Cain’s father hates him and blames him for it all. He whips Cain every night as punishment. When he was 5 his step-mother tried to kill him, but Alexis killed her. Happily that is, since Alexis never really loved the woman. She had found out about Augusta and Alexis and since Alexis had poisoned her she went out looking for Cain.
Seven years later Rifuel Raffit (Riff) comes to the Hargreaves household to work because his family went bankrupt. He was studying medicine at the time. After meeting Cain in an unusual situation, (Cain was amazed by the fact that he could be seen. All the other servants ignored Cain as if he wasn’t there. Cain faints into his arms as he finds out that Alexis has been beating Cain) Riff becomes close to him as he starts to pick up on what’s going on around the Hargreaves household.
Cain was never allowed to leave the house or to be around other people. He had tutors that came to the house, they would quit soon enough; an older tutor made a comment about eyes cannot change to gold or it comes from an incestuous relationship.
Riff is making tea, when he askes Cain if he wants sugar. Cain tells him no. Meanwhile Riff notices some samples of sugar on Cain’s desk. When he examines it, he’s baffled to discovers that it’s arsenic. Riff reads Cain’s mind as he says the boy knows his father is trying to kill him, which is why Cain doesn’t want sugar in his tea. Cain denies that his father is trying to kill him.
The boy visits his aunt Augusta as she has a fit because he resembles Alexis so. She screams and begs for him not to hurt her anymore. She is so frightened, that she jumps out the window. In her last few breaths she tells Cain to not lose like she had, and that his father enjoyed keeping others from happiness; she died calling him her child.
Cain finally acknowledges that his father hates him and wants him dead. He goes home prepared to take on his father. Alexis gives him a cup a tea as Cain drinks it and falls down….dead?
Alexis tells Cain’s unmoving form how much he hates him, and how he ruined his life while smoking his pipe. Cain sits up with a smile on his face as he tells his shocked father that he switched the arsenic in the cabinet with a powder made of roses, so he would know if someone was trying to kill him.
But the bigger surprise is when Alexis starts to feel weird and coughs up blood. Cain poisoned his pipe. As he staggers to the balcony he tells Cain that he is a demon child, and named after the first killer in the bible. He will never find happiness, no one will ever love him and he will die alone. Alexis jumps over the balcony into the water.
Cain cries as he tells Riff that it’s the last time he will. So at the age 12, Cain gains the title of Count.

Present

Cain is the dark, strange, and sexy Count of the Hargreaves family. He’s a real ladies man as women constantly swoon at his feet.
Cain flirts with many women in the series whether it’s by kissing them or taking them home with him. Cain may have not had connections with the outside world, but he knows how to work it. Although I’m not actually sure he’s slept with them. To do so would require him to take off his shirt, (or not) which would show off his scars on his back. But hey, shirt or no shirt it could work!
But Cain is far from innocent though, which is read in a panel of “Miss Pudding Tragedy”. Cain was um…working but she stopped him quickly saying she couldn’t do it.
But it's okay Cain doesn’t usually loves those girls anyway. On the rare occasions that he does,they usually die. (Example: his cousin Shuzette. Which he finds out is also his half sister. Poor Cain, incest haunts him in every corner.)
Cain can be described as eccentric, arrogant sometimes,and calculating. You sometimes have to wonder what’s going on in that dark mind of his.
Cain has a very laid back,‘I don’t care’ kind of attitude. He basically just wants to live his life and forget about his horrible past. Of course his father wants other wise. Whether it’s for his beauty or for his strange hobby,Cain is well known by others.
Everywhere he goes he’s constantly stepping over corpses, and mangled bodies. ith his loyal servant Riff by his side, he’s like a young Sherlock Holmes. Only difference is Cain has a ‘high’ sense of justice. (To some it’s called Revenge)
Not that I’m saying Cain will always out right kill the criminal. He tends to give them a poison that has their mind pass judgment and they tend to be a danger to themselves afterwards. But it’s not Cain’s fault that a guy has a hallucination and fires a gun that’s plugged up, or if a man accidentally slathers his own daughter. Get my point?
In book two,“The Sound of a Boy Hatching”. Cain meets a young girl named Merriweather, which by the end of the chapter he finds that she is his sister. It seems that Alexis had a thing with the chambermaid. The Hargreaves family of course fired her for it.
Cain adopts Merryweather as he constantly spoils her. She adores and loves her brother a lot. It’s because of her that Cain knows how it feels to be loved by someone.(Not that Riff doesn’t love his young master)
Cain also has a brother named Dr Jezebel Disraeli, which Alexis adopts.
